Subject: Support the Saving America's Pollinators Act

Message:

As your constituent, I urge you to cosponsor the Saving America's Pollinators Act of 2019, introduced by Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR-3) on February 25, 2019. This bill aims to help protect pollinators by suspending the use of neonicotinoids and establishing a review process for all pesticides that are potentially harmful to pollinators. Pollinators are a critical part of our food supply. Bees are responsible for one in every three bites of food we eat, contributing as much as $577 billion GDP in global food production and nearly $27 billion GDP in the U.S. alone. Without pollinators, many foods we depend on would become scarce, making it difficult to sustain the global human population. A United Nations-backed report estimates 40% of pollinator species, including bees and butterflies, are on the brink of extinction. Beekeepers have lost an average of 40% of their hives with some beekeepers losing 100% of their operations. In the past twenty years, monarch butterflies have declined by nearly 90%. Native bees are also dying at alarming rates. In 2017, the rusty patched bumble bee was listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act after having declined 87% in 20 years. Passing Representative Blumenauer’s bill would protect the health of our pollinators while providing ways to determine the risks associated with neonicotinoids. Therefore, it is vitally important that you cosponsor the Saving America’s Pollinators Act and advocate for its passage this year. This is an important step forward to reverse the decline of pollinator species and secure vital protections for bees and other pollinators now and for future generations.
